Ethnographic Cinema. A history of seeing otherness and ourselves.

/

Lecture on Moving image / Visual representations

Ethnographic Cinema. A history of seeing otherness and ourselves.

Anthropology as a discipline has encountered with the issues of identity and otherness since its earliest steps. In parallel, it has formed a unique relationship with the “image” and especially with the “moving image”. The history of the genre that is called “ethnographic cinema” reflects the evolvement of this relationship. During the last four decades “visual anthropology” has been a dynamic field where the issues of ethnographic cinema and visual representation within anthropology are dynamically debated. Nowadays, the production of ethnographic films is constantly increasing and the theory and methods they carry are often challenging the stereotypes through which we view films and their subjects.

The workshop will be a short introduction to the history of ethnographic cinema and will present current trends in visual anthropology and the filmic representations of “distant” and “familiar” subjects through several fragments of films. Screenings with selected films relevant to the ALIEN project will follow.

Giving Voice to the Authentic Migrant Experience

/

Round table on education

This round table discussion forum is an opportunity for participants from all sectors of Education, from NGOs, Local and National Government to contribute to the current debate around Education for Migration.

The presenter, Dr Margaret Allan from the University of the West of Scotland, will deliver the outcome of the Education strand of the Alien project: an Education module focussing on developing awareness and knowledge in the field of migration within Europe and ways in which the authentic migrant voice can be heard.

Participants will be encouraged to discuss and give feedback, in a plenary session, on both the aims and the intended learning outcomes of the module and to suggest contexts in which it could be delivered, and to whom.

The module has developed from the work of student participants of the Project and is aimed at learners from the School, College and University sectors across Europe.

It aims to:

1.raise awareness of the authentic migrant voice

2.encourage discussion and critical analysis of the migrant context as portrayed in the media

3.create avenues to enable the migrant voice to be heard, for example through testimonials and phenomenological activities such as learning through a guided walk

4.enable learners to develop and sustain knowledge acquired through interactive methodologies and pedagogy

Discussion Questions:

Among the questions participants will be asked to discuss are:

1.Are the aims and intended learning outcomes sustainable and viable across a variety of sectors and learning contexts?

2.Does the module promote learning through interactive methodology and pedagogy?

3.Can you suggest ways in which the module can be delivered effectively in your context?

Before professors and students arrive for their morning classes, these are the people finishing work. Fleeing the social and political instability of their home countries, many Latin Americans come to London looking for work opportunities and a safe environment to raise and educate their children. In turn, they are confronted with discrimination, labour exploitation and social “invisibility”. After more than eight years of campaigning, the immigrant cleaners outsourced at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London continue to demand being brought in-house. “Limpiadores” charts the history of their and others’ campaign – from winning the London Living Wage to the deportation of nine colleagues, and the day-to- day invisible labour of cleaners on campus.

/

Andy Lawrence and Elena Barabantseva, United Kingdom (2015)  - Selection of Ethnofest

at 22.10

The film is about Daniel and Kevin, two school boys born to Chinese migrants and living in Manchester. It engages their everyday struggles of reconciling their Britishness with Chineseness through their experiences at school, as volunteers at a community centre, and at home. The film uses an ethical approach driven by dialogue and close involvement with the film’s subjects to understand the vulnerabilities through which the boys navigate their place in the British society. It not only uncovers new dimensions to understanding the ways the subjects experience their lifeworlds, but also seeks to reduce the epistemic violence of dominant visual forms of representation.

After having lived in the Netherlands for over 20 years, the director’s parents, Gulzar and Shwan, decide to return back to Kurdistan, their homeland. Escaping the Iraqi regime as refugees in the early 90s, they became part of the larger Kurdish Diaspora who resettled in the Europe. In the recent decade, Iraqi Kurdistan has developed into a regional safe-haven. However, with current tensions around the threat of the Islamic State (IS), the social and political landscape in the Middle East is changing drastically. In “Haraka Baraka”, the director follows her parents’ return to their homeland whilst addressing the renegotiation of belonging, temporality and future during a (seemingly) timeless crisis.

At home in the world (58 min)

/

Andreas Koefoed, Sonntag Pictures (2016)

at 22.00

AT HOME IN THE WORLD is an intimate depiction of the everyday lives of five refugee children on a Danish Red Cross asylum school.

The children; Magomed, Sehmuz, Heda, Amel and Ali have different nationalities and backgrounds, but they have all fled their homes with their families, arriving in Denmark with the hope of starting over.

Over the course of one year, there is an 80% replacement in one class on the asylum school. Few are granted residency in Denmark, and move out of the asylum centres to become part of the Danish society. Others are rejected and sent back to their country of origin. Some go underground and continue their lives on the run from the atrocities in their home country.

Over the course of a year, we follow the children in an ever-changing environment. It is hard to create bonds and friendships, and the tone is often harsh amongst the kids, as they all fight inner battles with traumatic events of their past. We follow their attempt to learn a new language, create friendships and prepare to form a new home in Denmark.

The teacher, Dorte, is one the people, who try to create safe conditions around the children and their families at the asylum school. Through true engagement and empathy, Dorte becomes close with the children despite their difficulties and personal challenges. Dorte fights a brave battle to bring out the best in the children and for them to gain personal victories – so they can create a new place in the world, where they can feel at home.
